This summer, as opposed to the others before it, I decided NOT to shop the hundreds of designer sales at the major department stores. Why, you may ask? The reason is twofold. The first being that I was away so much this summer, I could not physically be at any of these stores. The second reason is that since we traveled so much this summer, I decided to be a responsible partner in our 31 year marriage, and not add to my already overly full closets. And since I ruthlessly purge my closets twice a year, donating and re-selling my clothes, I can always see what is in them. Case in point, this is my amazing Cedric Charlier dress that I purchased last summer at the final reduction Saks Fifth Avenue sale.
The first time I wore this dress was this past spring in Palm Springs. It sat in the closet for several months simply because I couldn’t find the right “event” at which to wear it. Once I decided to turn it into a casual dress by pairing it with flat sandals, it has seen the light of day (and night), many times. I also found these edgy black strappy Chanel sandals last summer during the final markdown at Saks. I happened to be at the store when they were being returned…otherwise, I can assure you that never would have happened!
One thing that I have several of, is a black cardigan. I have them in wool, nylon, silk and cotton. No matter the season, I always take a sweater with me. Even when the temperature is well into the 80s and 90s, the AC inside converts summer into winter, so having a lightweight cardigan that you can toss into a purse or tied at the shoulder is a must.
I encourage you to shop your closet for an entire season. You will truly get to know what you have and what you might need. If I can do it, trust me, so can you!

What a fun dress, Lesley!!! It’s totally smart to shop our closets—heck we have so many fabulous things already there!!! It’s just finding the time to wear them all!!
